Mechelen
Never heard of Mechelen? That's quite normal. It is a small city with no world famous festivals, no university and no big art scene. But the fact that Mechelen is a small town, is also its attraction. It's not eaten up by tourists like Bruges, but has some of the same beautiful houses next to the water, an impressive medieval cathedral, and a charming old beguinage.
People from Mechelen like to complain that there is not much nightlife, and instead of saying "this bar is really nice" they say "how long before this one closes down?"
